KaiHuaRor (Laughter for Sale) is a Thai comic magazine published by Banluesarn Publishing since 1973. It is the best-selling and longest-running comic brand in Thailand.
KaiHuaRor is endeared by its many Thai fan readers who grew up with the KaiHuaRor brand. Thai people of various ages and backgrounds are familiar with and feel attached to KaiHuaRor, as many of them grew up reading KaiHuaRor or learnt to read thanks to reading KaiHuaRor when they were young.
KaiHuaRor is widely recognised among the Thai press and fans as the ‘Common Humour of Households’ and admired as ‘Thailand’s National Archive’ and ‘Comic Annals of Thailand’, as major global and national phenomena/trends and significant historical events are regularly portrayed in KaiHuaRor’s comics from past to present.
In 2003, KaiHuaRor was ranked by AC Nielsen as the most popular magazine in Thailand. It was also awarded by the Writers Association of Thailand as one of ‘101 favorite books of Thai writers and readers’ in 2010. In addition, according to Thai Health Promotion Foundation’s survey in 2011, KaiHuaRor was ranked in the top 5 of ‘the most preferred books which school kids and teenagers nationwide would like to recommend to peers and would like to receive as a gift’. KaiHuaRor is also widely acknowledged and ranked as the best-seller comics of all time in Thailand.
To maintain its success as the one-stop destination delivering happiness for the audience, Kai Hua Ror expanded the comic territory into cartoon animations and digital products. Those additional product lines are namely TV animation (2001-present), TV series (2019), movies (2005), commercial films, games, character development, digital content, and merchandising products. Recently, Kai Hua Ror also expanded into the events business, such as organizing school programs, stage shows, exhibitions, workshops, and a running event called ‘Harathon’ (‘Ha’ means ‘funny’ in Thai). These events are warmly welcome in the Thai market and are selected by many brands and organisations for collaboration and marketing purposes.
And not only did Kai Hua Ror burst into popularity in Thailand, but it was awarded the International Manga Awards and is the only comic book from an ASEAN country to have been exhibited at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. According to the huge success and popularity among Thai people, UN Women partnered with Kai Hua Ror to advocate for ‘gender equality’ issues in Thailand, and we likewise partnered with UN HCR to raise awareness on refugee problems in the nation and neighbouring countries
Recently in May 2020, Kai Hua Ror collaborated with WHO, UN and the Thai government in the education of the Thai public on the prevention of COVID-19 transmission. This special COVID-19 edition of Kai Hua Ror was also translated into and published in English and the foreign languages of neighbouring countries.
KaiHuaRor has created many famous classic gags and characters that are the ‘memes’ of KaiHuaRor that fans know and love. In particular, the castaway-on-an-island gag is the signature gag of Kai Hua Ror, with many depictions on the covers. The popularity has led fans to name one island in the Trat province the ‘Kai Hua Ror Island’. It has become another landmark tourist attraction in Thailand, with organized tours for fans that want to visit the ‘KaiHuaRor Island’. In 2021, KaiHuaRor was honoured to be invited by the Tourism Authority of Thailand to be the official tourism promotion partner for the island, which has been officially recognized as the ‘KaiHuaRor Island’.
